Home language tuition is a form of study programme where tutors combine hosting a foreign student with teaching them in their own home. We believe that the success of our programmes lies in our host teachers and in our ability to select the right student for them – matching a student’s requirements with a teacher’s. InTuition Languages was established in 1990 to provide top-quality one-to-one tuition in the home of an English teacher. We are accredited by the British Council for our English Language host tutors across the UK, and have developed networks across Ireland, Malta, the USA, Canada and Australia. We are also proud to provide home tuition in other European countries: French in France, Spanish in Spain, Italian in Italy and German in Germany. We pride ourselves in offering a personal service to each and every one of our clients.
InTuition Languages meet the needs of an increasing number of teachers who require flexibility, allowing them to work from home, when they want to. Whether EFL teachers already working as freelancers, or a qualified modern languages teacher free in the holidays, our hosts enjoy the same high levels of support and guidance from our experienced Directors of Studies and bookings team.

It sounds intensive – and it can be – but it is also enjoyable and rewarding for both the student and the host tutor. It also pays well. The average length of course is one to four weeks and the standard format is for 15, 20, 25 or 30 hour lessons per week plus full-board accommodation for the student. The student benefits from receiving quality one-to-one tuition and also being assured of an educated host family, open to foreign visitors and offering a comfortable and hospitable environment.
We are an equal opportunity employer: we welcome people from all background and recognise that InTuition’s success lies in our ability to create an inclusive environment where everyone can realise their potential. We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and expect all our homestay teachers to share this commitment.
If you feel that home language tuition suits your lifestyle and would like to join our team, then please complete our on-line application form or call 020 7739 4411 during office hours.
We look forward to hearing from you.

Most of our students are adults, although occasionally we are asked to place younger students. All nationalities can be represented, the majority coming from European countries and Japan. Nearly all have at least a basic knowledge of English before they arrive, and expect to improve their skills with a full immersion experience. It is important that the host family not only help the student with these skills, but also help them adjust to what might be a very foreign culture. The best tutors help students find their way around, meet other people and get a taste of what life is really like in the area they have chosen. Courses typically last between 1 and 4 weeks. The majority of our students take courses in the spring and summer months.
Many of our host tutors like the flexibility of working from home on a freelance basis and welcome the extra income that having students for 10 or 12 weeks a year can provide. A number teach in schools in term-time and are free during holiday periods. Others, often with valuable business English teaching experience gained from working in commerce or the professions, have retired early and enjoy the new direction that our courses offer.
Working with InTuition Languages enables teachers to work on a freelance basis but still receive professional support.
Teaching Business English and English for Exams, such as the IELTS, Cambridge First Certificate (FCE), Advanced (CAE) and Proficiency (CPE), are both popular options.

This will depend on where you live and how flexible you are on accepting different types of students throughout the year.

Our busiest period is July and August. We like to reward host teachers who work with us over this period with priority o for out of season bookings.

Our most popular locations are: London; Oxford; Cambridge; Brighton as well as Manchester and Edinburgh. We do work hard to break these requests for “traditional” locations as we believe there are some fantastic places to stay which are off the beaten EFL track.

When InTuition accepts students under 18, prospective tutors will be informed in writing that:
• references will be followed up
• all gaps in CVs must be explained satisfactorily
• proof of identity and qualifications will be required
• reference requests will ask specifically whether there is any reason that they should not be employed in situations where they have responsibility for, or substantial access to, persons under 18
• appropriate Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) or Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance will be required prior to confirmation of appointment.
Most of our students are highly motivated and appreciate that the main reason for their visit is to learn English. However, they also appreciate the chance to enjoy themselves. The success of the course depends on your ability to devote time to the student and to engage them in conversation. To this end, we match the interests and hobbies of the student and teacher / family very carefully so as to make conversation easier and the stay as enjoyable as possible for both sides. The intensity of the course and the importance of conversation to the student indicates total teacher commitment. Even though our bookings with you may be periodic, we cannot book students with you if you are going to be working full- or part-time while the student is with you.
In addition to receiving individual tuition, students want to join in your everyday life and experiences, so it is vital that you are willing to include them in your activities – however mundane they may seem to you! You will likely also want to take them to local places of interest (students are expected to pay for all entrance fees, etc, themselves, but are not expected to share petrol costs when you take them somewhere by car). Many students specify that they want to pursue a particular sport during their course. We always do our best to take your own interests and hobbies into consideration when placing a student with you so that you can enjoy your leisure activities together.
InTuition Languages are committing to running a programme of CPD courses for our teachers throughout the year.
We currently offer our homestay English teachers free online teacher training sessions, in addition to the two International House World Organisation Online Teacher Conferences each year (May and November).
Topics of on line teacher training courses
• Dealing with Feedback
• Materials and Approaches
• Time Management
• Writing Skills
• Task Based Learning
• Teacher Talking Time
• Teaching Young Learners – Motivating teenagers
• Using Technology
• Learner Diaries
• Teaching Conditionals
• Pronunciation.
We also run a series of live CPD training sessions, organised by our Director of Studies and ADoS and featuring a guest trainer.
Teachers should speak English as a native speaker and, in addition to a first degree or equivalent, hold an accredited ELT qualification such as the Cambridge or Trinity College Certificate or Diploma. For the teaching of young learners a BEd or PGCE and experience in English language teaching to foreign students may be considered. A warm and friendly personality and the ability to communicate are equally important requirements for an InTuition teacher.
Two qualifications are truly internationally recognised as official, entry-level “TEFL” certificates:
1. The Cambridge CELTA – (Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults)
2. The Trinity Cert TESOL – (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages)
Both can be completed as full-time, 4-week intensive courses or on a part-time basis. Both follow a set syllabus designed to cover all aspects of ELT and are externally moderated and assessed.
Below are the list of International House schools offering first rate CELTA courses.
