FAQs
Home tuition is a unique, complete immersion form of language course, where tutors combine hosting with teaching them in their own home.
We believe that the success of our programmes lies in our host teachers and in our ability to select the right student for them – matching a student’s requirements with a teacher’s. InTuition Languages was established in 1992 to provide top-quality one-to-one tuition in the home of an English teacher. We are accredited by the British Council for our courses in the UK, and have developed networks of EFL tutors across the English-speaking world. We are also provide EFL and MFL home tuition in other European countries. We pride ourselves in offering a personal service to each and every one of our clients.
We aim to meet the needs of an increasing number of teachers who require flexibility, allowing them to work from home when they want to. Our host tutors enjoy the same high levels of support and guidance from our experienced Directors of Studies and bookings team as would be expected in any accredited language school.
The average length of course is two weeks and the standard format is for 20 or 25 tuition hours per week, plus full-board accommodation for the student. The student benefits from receiving quality one-to-one tuition and also being assured of an educated host family, open to foreign visitors and offering a comfortable and hospitable environment.
InTuition’s success lies in our ability to create an inclusive environment where everyone can realise their potential. We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and expect all our homestay teachers to share this commitment.

Our students are a mix of adults and Young Learners (aged 10-17). All nationalities can be represented, the majority coming from European countries, China, Japan, Brazil and the Middle East. Tutors decide which students they wish to host on a case-by-case basis.
Nearly all have at least a basic knowledge of the language of study before they arrive, and expect to improve their skills with a full immersion experience. It is important that the host family not only help the student with these skills, but also help them adjust to what might be a very foreign culture.
The best tutors help students find their way around, meet other people and get a taste of what life is really like in the area they have chosen. Courses typically last between one and four weeks and the majority of our students take courses in the spring, summer and autumn.
Most of our students are highly motivated and appreciate that the main reason for their visit is to learn. However, they also appreciate the chance to enjoy themselves. The success of the course depends on your ability to devote time to the student and to engage them in conversation. To this end, we match the interests and hobbies of the student and teacher / family very carefully so as to make conversation easier and the stay as enjoyable as possible for both sides. The intensity of the course and the importance of conversation to the student indicates total teacher commitment. Even though our bookings with you may be periodic, we cannot book students with you if you are going to be working full- or part-time while the student is with you.
In addition to receiving individual tuition, students want to join in your everyday life and experiences, so it is vital that you are willing to include them in your activities – however mundane they may seem to you! You will likely also want to take them to local places of interest (students are expected to pay for all entrance fees, etc, themselves, but are not expected to share petrol costs when you take them somewhere by car). Many students specify that they want to pursue a particular sport during their course. We always do our best to take your own interests and hobbies into consideration when placing a student with you so that you can enjoy your leisure activities together.
We provide a programme of CPD courses for our teachers throughout the year.
We also arrange an annual Teacher Conference with sessions run by our Directors of Studies and guest speakers, and periodic Gatherings where a member of the head office team travels to your area to deliver specific trainings.
Contact our Director of Studies (EFL) or Directrice d'etudes (MFL) for more information.
InTuition tutors receive a range of benefits, including:
- 20% discount at Bournemouth English Book Centre
- Free access to the One Stop English resource bank.
- 20% discount on language courses at schools across the International House network (available for both tutors and their family members)
EFL teachers should speak English to native standard and, in addition to a first degree or equivalent, hold an accredited ELT qualification such as the Cambridge or Trinity College Certificate or Diploma. For the teaching of young learners a BEd or PGCE and experience in English language teaching to foreign students may be considered. A warm and friendly personality and the ability to communicate are equally important requirements for an InTuition teacher.
Two qualifications are truly internationally recognised as official, entry-level “TEFL” certificates:
1. The Cambridge CELTA – (Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults)
2. The Trinity Cert TESOL – (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages)
Both can be completed as full-time, 4-week intensive courses or on a part-time basis. Both follow a set syllabus designed to cover all aspects of ELT and are externally moderated and assessed.
MFL teachers should speak the language of instruction to a native standard and be appropriately qualified for the delivery of language tuition. Please contact us for further details.
