Trinity College London’s Secure English Language Tests (SELTs) are approved for applications to the UK Visa and Immigration (UKVI) for Visas, Leave to Remain and British Citizenship.

Who is the SELT preparation course for?

This course is to prepare you for the SELT exam needed for your Home Office visa application in the UK or entry application to a UK University.
The preparation course will prepare you for the exam but you need to be the correct level of English to pass this exam. If you are not the correct level a 4 hour preparation course will not help you reach the level required.

What will the SELT preparation course involve?

Our preparation courses cover all the training you need to help you confidently sit for the A1 / B1 & B2 SELT Test. We provide SELT preparation courses to ensure candidates are fully prepared for their tests and pass first time.

For people who need a lot more support and personalised assistance.
Our Super Intensive course is aimed at GESE Levels 3 and 5 – for those with an English level of A2 or B1 who need to work on areas of their English Language before they sit the test.
It is 12 hours taken in 4 sessions of 3 hours and provides:

  • Initial assessment to determine your readiness for taking a GESE 3 or 5 Test.
  • Preparation for your selected UKVI B1 Speaking and Listening Test.

What is SELT?


SELT (Secure English Language Tests) are tests introduced by the British Government (Home Office) to test English levels of candidates for their immigration/visa applications.

SELTs have a short listening and speaking component intended to ensure applicants have a high enough level of English to be able to live in the UK. The Trinity College London Graded Exams in Spoken English (GESE) are approved to meet the visa requirements.

A SELT is compulsory for the following visa applications:

Further Leave to Remain or Spouse/Partner Visa:

For this you must pass a SELT in Speaking and Listening. This is the Trinity GESE Grade 2.

Further Leave to Remain (visa extension):

For this you must pass a SELT in at least CEFR level A2* in Speaking and Listening. This is the Trinity GESE Grade 3.

Indefinite Leave to Remain or British Citizenship:

For this you need an intermediate level of English and must pass a SELT in in Speaking and Listening. This is the Trinity GESE Grade 5.

English Exams needed for UK Visa:


Below is a list provided by the UK Government Home Office of the levels required for each visa type.
  • Family life as a partner of a settled person (Spouse/Partner)
  • Family life as a parent (Parent of a dependant)

This is the current A1 English language requirement. A1 Speaking and Listening GESE grade2.

  • Tier 1 (General) visa C1 Reading, writing,
    speaking and listening ISE III

  • Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur) visa B1 Reading, writing, speaking and listening ISE I
  • Tier 2 (General) visa B1 Reading, writing,
    speaking and listening ISE I Tier 2 (Minister of Religion) visa B2 Reading, writing, speaking and listening ISE II
  • Tier 2 (Sportsperson) visa A1 Reading, writing, speaking and listening GESE grade2
  • Tier 4 (General) Student visa — below degree level.

  • Tier 4 (General) Student visa — below degree level.

English language tests for private hire drivers


Transport for London (TfL) require all new applicants, and existing private hire drivers applying to renew their licence for the first time, must meet the English language TfL requirement, which is a B1 level.

This requirement is the Trinity’s ISE: Integrated Skills in English Test. It is a test of 4 skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening.

English Language Test for Private Hire Drivers in London.

The Trinity ISE I (B1) Secure English Language Test (SELT) is approved by Transport for London (TfL) for private hire driver licence applications.

ISE I

You must pass a Secure English Language Test (SELT) at least CEFR level B1 in Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening for a:

  • Tier 1 (Entrepreneur) visa
  • Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur) visa
  • Tier 2 (General) visa
  • Tier 4 (General) Student visa

ISE II

You must pass a Secure English Language Test (SELT) at least CEFR level C1 in Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening for a:

  • Tier 4 (General) Student visa Trinity’s ISE III exam = CEFR C1.
  • ISE III Test of 4 skills: Reading & Writing and Speaking

ISE III

You must pass a Secure English Language Test (SELT) at least CEFR level B2 in Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening for a:

  • Tier 2 (Minister of Religion) visa
  • Tier 4 (General) Student
