Benefits
What’s required to be a Host tutor? We have found there are four basic ingredients for a successful teacher/host:
What's involvedMany of our host tutors like the flexibility of working from home on a freelance basis and welcome the extra income that having students for 10 or 12 weeks a year can provide. A number teach in term-time and are free during holiday periods. Many others, often with valuable business English teaching experience gained from working in commerce or the professions, have retired early and enjoy the new departure that our courses represent. Working with InTuition Languages enables teachers to work on a freelance basis but still receive professional support. Teaching Business English and Teaching English for Exams, such as the IELTS, Cambridge First Certificate (FCE), Advanced (CAE) and Proficiency (CPE), are both popular options. We are looking for qualified EFL tutors who can offer a clean and hospitable home in which to host and teach English as a foreign language. What kind of students do we receive? Most of our students are adults, although occasionally we are asked to place younger students. All nationalities can be represented, the majority coming from European countries and Japan. Nearly all have at least a basic knowledge of English before they arrive, and expect to improve their skills with the total immersion experience. It is important that the host family not only help the student with these skills, but also help them adjust to what might be a very different culture, find their way around, meet other people and get a taste of what life is really like in the area they have chosen. Courses typically last between 1 and 3 weeks. The majority of our students come over in the spring and summer months. There is a flow of students out of season, but they do tend to focus on the London area. What happens out of lessons? Most of our students are highly motivated and appreciate that the main reason for their visit is to learn English. However, they also appreciate the chance to enjoy themselves. The success of the course depends on your ability to devote time to the student and to engage them in conversation. To this end we match the interests and hobbies of the student and teacher/family very carefully so as to make conversation easier and the stay as enjoyable as possible for both sides. The intensity of the course and the importance of conversation to the student really implies total teacher commitment. Even though our bookings with you may be periodic, we cannot book students with you if you are going to be working full or part-time while the student is with you. In addition to receiving individual tuition, students want to join in your everyday life and experiences, so it is vital that you are willing to include them in your activities, however mundane. You will probably also want to take them to local places of interest (note that students are expected to pay for all entrance fees, etc. themselves, but are not expected to share petrol costs when you take them somewhere by car). Many students specify that they want to pursue a particular sport during their course. We always do our best to take your own interests and hobbies into consideration when placing a student with you so that you can enjoy your leisure activities together. What to do next? Please apply on-line and email us a photograph of your home.
