Things to see and do

The West End is the City of Westminster, with main attractions like the Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, The House of Parliament, and the Westminster Abbey. In this area many government buildings are located, with Downing Street being home for the Prime Minister and The Chancellor of the Exchequer for over two hundred years now.

But there is also the financial and business oriented City of London, the leading centre of global finance. London district Canary Wharf is a financial oriented centre as well.

london_2Shopping at Harrods or Bond Street for the rich, going out for dinner in China Town, drinks in Soho, attending an art gallery in Notting Hill, going to the theatre at Picadilly Circus or Victoria, wandering around on flea markets in Camden… London offers cultural opportunities for everyone.

You can read or relax in one of the many parks, with Hyde Park being the best-known and largest of them all.

london_3Museum entrance is for free on normal days. If there is a special exhibition, it might not be free.

Public transport in London is great. Buses are driving very often and the underground network is very comprehensive and punctual. Also, taking a cab might be fun to have experienced maybe once in your live. That is not difficult, there are plenty.

Other highlights include the Tower Bridge, the Tower Of London, the Wembley Stadium, Travalgar Square, and St. Paul’s Cathedral.

... that the treasures stored in the British Museum span two million years of world civilization?

... that ‘Big Ben’ does not refer to the famous tower, but to the 13 ton bell? The tower is known as St. Stephen’s Tower.

... that if London was a country, it would be the 8th biggest in Europe?

london_5... that the address used by Conan Doyle as Sherlock Holmes’ residence (221B Baker) is in fact not existing? So do not bother looking for Sherlock’s home! In 1990 the Sherlock Holmes museum was established. Even though this is located on 239 Baker, it received the city’s permission to use a fictional address: 221B Baker.

How to get there

London is blessed with five international airports in a close range. Heathrow is the largest of them all, and is close to the city. That also applies to London City Airport. Luton, Gatwick and Stansted are all approximately an hour away by bus or train.
